Started 1979to get out the word about the NA World Convention in Atlanta, Georgia, the Rainbow Connection ran for several years under the Marietta ASC and Bo S. John H. continued the publication for a few more months. The Rainbow Connection was one among many for the next decade or so. The Handbook for Literature Committees had a special section on how to form a local newsletter. The excitement of having a Basic Text reverberated throughout the world of NA. Describing personal events in recovery and announcing information across the board fed ideas and information throughout the Fellowship. It gave information out to the Fellowship while giving NA members a voice for the first time.

Introduction
The New Rainbow Connection will provide a place for a quick read, announcements and study materials on working the Steps along with helping others. The original magazine will be available as a booklet as well as a website. If you enjoy you can also submit articles with no copyright issues. Price of the booklets will cover printing and shipping.

AS A MEMBER SEES IT:

The court system has changed the landscape of 12 step to people who need it, not people who want it. By sentencing people to an outside treatment facilitywhich require mandatory attendance at 1w step, the courts, with our blessings have changed our meetings to essentially serve people who need it, not people who want it. When you haver 45 people in a meeting from one of these houses, and 3 there on their own, the message is no longer delivered. The topic of the last meeting was “What was your last drunk like”. As one girl put it “Gee, all this talk makes me want to go out and get drunk.” A deeply rooted premise in 12 step leadership is that we can make people be clean and sober. This is part codependent and part in a desperate attempt to get warm bodies into a program with a zero percent success rate.

The abysmal recovery rate is due to the violation of the Traditions by affiliating with, endorsing and having an opinion on these government run programs. The power at be at the top are tone deaf to any feedback from people in the trenches with long clean time. Twelve Step is a glacier ever sliding forward in a path that cannot be changes. No non-court slip signing meetings are allowed, thus further insuring no possibility of change from this disastrous course. What happens when the 3 old-timers get tired of the game or die? This is is just 45 outside group guys chanting the mantra “I have been coming to 12 Step meetings for 20 years and have a week once again.

Meanwhile the drug epidemic rages on unchecked. When I came in everyone I knew had been sentenced to AA and none ever got clean and sober. So what was I to think. AA did not work. Then I found NA and got clean at my first meeting. It was a million to one shot and I got it. I apologize for being negative but this is the honest to God truth from the trenches where I live.

Elder's Meditation
"It is not through the great skill of the hunter himself that success is achieved, but through the hunter's awareness of his place in Creation and his relationship to all things." --Thomas Yellowtail, CROW

If only the human being could understand the power of proper relationships, the need for power and control could be abandoned. It's not what is going on that matters, but how we look at what is going on. It's our relationship to it that counts. Nothing in the world has any meaning except the meaning we give to it. To be more effective at this, we need to consider our relationship with the Creator. Our relationship to the Great Spirit determines how we will perceive the meanings we put to places, people, institutions and things. We need to let the Creator tell us and guide our thoughts about these relationships. Any relationship that we have that is causing problems means we need to pray for a new point of view.

Creator, let me see the world and the people through your eyes.

ZOOM MEETINGS AND NA

Some NA members are holding out for what they know has worked for them in the past. Go to a N.A .meeting. Get hugs, see friends, watch the key tags, give hugs, listen to the readings and then share your experience, strength and hope. And conversely, here the experience, strength and hope of others. Then like a bad dream, the carpet gets pulled out and you find yourself in a position many of us thought not even possible. Little to no NA meetings as we have come to know them....at ALL!

Will everything go back to as we once experienced? We all surely hope so. But the reality of the situation is, we just can't accurately predict the future. And we don't know when, or even if, they will be as we had been accustomed to.

But we all have been given some gifts in recovery. Some tools that many 'normal's' may not have! We make a practice out of learning how to stay in “Just For Today.” and that gives us a special ability to not dwell in the past and not project or put unrealistic expectations on the future. We learn that when we practice staying in the here and now...we feel a little better.

We may very be some of the best positioned people in the world to deal with this crisis! We have all already learned how to “Completely change our old ways of thinking and living!” We do it every day and we have been doing it since day one! For non-addicts that concept would be foreign and frightening. But this is a time for us to shine and let society know that CHANGE IS POSSIBLE! We know! We are living examples. And now, we may have to be the book others outside of N.A. get to read. So lets make it a good read for them! In this way, we can truly change the world. Who knows, maybe this has been our true destiny all along. Remember.....Spiritual awakening.....carry THE message....practice these principles in ALL our affairs! We truly have a lot to give!

We know that we have been given some steps. Things that allow us to turn to something, greater then ourselves, to help restore some sanity in our lives. We can inventory how we are feeling and take corrective measures where need be. We can freely give of ourselves in many ways! Some newfound ways. And that brings us to Zoom meetings.

One thing we do very well... is adapt! Hell we all know that 'addiction' always wants us to fit in with our surroundings. And our surrounding have been changed. This is one of the reasons that the ZOOM platform of Virtual NA meetings is gaining in popularity and is a viable option for those members, who believe that a addict alone is in bad company. It's just another “tool” for an addict to use in their recovery arsenal!

Personally, I'm viewing the whole ZOOM thing as kinda' like old school NA. Lots of similarities to the old days of N.A. Back when you might have to drive 20 or 30 miles to get from one meeting to the other.....(Or more depending on your geographic location and what year you got clean) The similarity if you are having a hard time seeing it is this....no one WANTED to have to allot an hour drive time before and after to get to a meeting. But we did, because it's what needed to be done if you expected to not only stay clean but were to ever grow spiritually. Same with virtual NA meetings. You may not like the idea, but the alternative might be much worse. After all, addiction is just waiting to catch you with your pants down (in a non sexual way) and LOVES when you isolate in ANY way shape or form! It understands that when isolation begins, the door for the disease to come marching in is wide open.

What does the Zoom meeting REALLY offer me you might be asking? Well for starters our NA zoom meetings are “BY ADDICTS AND FOR ADDICTS”. You know the old saying “The ultimate weapon against addiction, is another recovering addict!” Many ZOOM meetings offer a familiarity of a regular NA meeting in that they do some of the NA readings like Who, What, How and Why...or others. It is also possible that some meetings may ask who is having an anniversary they would like to share. Speaking of sharing, ohhhhh yes! That is the crux of using Zoom to begin with! It allows Multiple (some up to a hundred or more members at a time) to CARE AND SHARE WITH OTHERS THE NA WAY!

One other advantage of the ZOOM platform that gives us an actual 'advantage' over a regular meeting is the ability to have people 'outside' of your local home group or area meeting you attend be there sharing with you! This can allow for OPEN SPEAKERS from ANYWHERE around the world to come and share! It can also help foster a better understanding of “NA as a WHOLE” in your life and offer a new found gratitude!

So what are you waiting for! Jump in and test out the water! Our water! Keep an open mind and who knows, you might even come to LOVE it! Hope to see you there!!!

What do we put first?

I was to meet with a sponsee at 2 this afternoon. At 2:30 he called to cancel. The wife wanted to go shopping.

After we get clean, our world gets bigger and wants us back. Doors open and opportunities present them selves. If we skip a meeting, nothing happens…for a while.

It is keeping the program as top priority that is critical. Eight pm is sacred ground.
We must block out time for our program. Nothing can interfere. And yet life screams out to us.

As a sponsor, I watch them slip away. It seems to them like they have things covered. But the disease is patient and will wait for us to get away from the program. Then it calls to us and we have no defense. We are surprised when we fall. How did that happen? We were so certain that we were on safe ground. We were going to one meeting a week. Shouldn’t that be enough?

I have seen a lot of good men go down this way. It was tragic and hurt so badly. This is the disease of addiction.

PTSD

Any trauma will result in long term effects. This is probably by definition, check it. Severe trauma takes into account the eventuality of repeated trauma and creates a response to deal with more hurt and pain. Addiction can be so severe that stress disorder puts a strain on our system which is the equivalent of a physical injury. Stress is more than a hinderence, it can be disabling. Without ever coming to pass, stress is readiness for situations not likely to occur. This energy drain is ongoing. Dealing with the trauma completely disarms this perpetual alert and frees up our energy.

MPD

Multiple personality disorder is defined where one or more secondary personalies exist without being aware of one another. This can be a the level of simple forgetfullness or total unconsciousness. We all wear a lot of hats and this is healthy and normal. Where specialized personalities deal with issues the other personality (s) can’t handle, there can be problems. Addiction puts strange pressure on us what we are normally capable of dealing with.

Medications

Modern pharmaceuticals are stronger and more dangerous than street drugs in many cases. Meds available have proliferated from a dozen to hundreds with no guidelines for doctors as to long term effects. For stay at home seniors, this can have dangerous side effects. Oxycontin is prominent pain med. Schizophrenics take SSRI drugs (Selective, Serotonin, Reuptake Inhibiter) while these fall into the category of mind or mood altering drugs they are different because the person by definition must take the drugs else they hallucinate.

NA Family Life

Nuclear family begins with the folks we meet and befriend in meetings: appropriate, available and human. The people we meet symbolize many of our family members. Our growth in Program spreads our trust bonds to include many more people. Active addiction estranges sons and daughters from blood relatives. Parents withdraw because they fear for our safety and don’t know how to act. Fear of relapse and feel defense mechanisms have to be close at hand without notice! One member says these words every time they speaks with their parents: “Mama, I’m still clean.” It is ongoing validation of our genuine desire for a new life! And repetition lets the parent know we take recovery seriously. Many of us stay clean as a way of making active amends.
We were capable of really stupid, mean things in active addiction. It may be we cannot recall everything we did! So, for our families, distance making behavior is very much in order! Only time, sincerity and appropriate amends can begin to renew family bonds. We practice up for this with our program associations! Our NA families help us rejoin our birth families.
The people we meeting in the NA Program may be symbolic of our nuclear family members. We practice getting along with them before spending more time with blood relations. Clean time increases our credibility.
The formations of cliques reflect our mental processes of associative learning. In NA there are thousands of friendship cliques that are very functional. Since we lack general social skills, we may be exclusive and rebuff those we don’t know well while we generally extend ourselves to get to know newcomers. Clique formations are one way we grow and learn internal resources we need to deal with everyday life situations. Not every member knows this and many never learn social skills. Lack of polite ways to deal with situations and make your point without generating unneeded unpleasantness complicate simple everyday situations.

Flip the Switch

At some point in recovery, it dawns on us that by using invisible forces like gratitude, prayer, Meditation, honesty, patience, and many other spiritual principles, we are doing with our minds and bodies what we do when we flip a switch. Turn on a toaster, Dial a number. Many devices use magnetism to perform their tasks. You gotta get it right for it to work! But once you do, it is useful forever, or till you run out of fuel! That’s what the meetings are for!

Pete B.
The structure exists to serve the groups - period. Our ultimate (and only) authority should be a loving God as it expresses itself through our Group Conscience. All else exists to provide service to the groups. When we move away from that (which we began to do in 1983 with the wording changes in traditions 4 and 9) we move onto a slippery slope that leads to what’s happened here in NA. The traditions, eventually, go out the window, their discardance justified and rationalized by the concepts, which work in direct contradiction to the traditions.

Ephipany occurred May 10th of this year, 2019. I finally realized that when we began to show signs of success working on writing the Basic Text, Narcotics Anonymous, the people in and around Jimmy K at our NA WSO were furious with us for not falling on our faces. They apparently didn’t read or take seriously what we put in our writings and announcements. For a good number of years, all forward events came from one place: WSO.

We thought that observation was true, especially the part that gave NA a voice though the NA Tree service structure written before or just after many of us got clean. We followed the structure to a tee. Approved in 1975, the NA Tree outlined a proper service structure. Written be a new member, Jimmy along with the World Service Board of Trustees had participated in the writing of the NA Tree prior to its approval. We in the East Coast and Midwest considered it inspired and at last we had a good and proper way to express our group conscience through a system of Groups, Areas and Regions bringing to all together in an annual conference.

The first Chair of the World Service Conference Literature Committee in 1978 put tons of time in copying the AA Big Book into the language of addiction by replacing the word alcohol into drugs. That turned out to fall short of what the Fellowship of NA had in mind. I chaired the Literature Committee in 1979. I had just chaired the World Convention in Atlanta and was very comfortable being chair. I knew how to turn it all over to a loving God and side-stepping egotism. I was in close and regular contact with Jimmy K as WSO manager and Greg P, author of the NA Tree structure and active on the NA Board of Trustees. At the WSC 1979 where I was elected, I recommended the attending Regional Representatives chose the location of a Conference to work towards writing a book for NA. They chose Wichita, Kansas. The choice reflected the desire to involve the East and West coasts of the United States.

All went well except the minutes which had to be deciphered from notes and resulted in the Handbook for NA Literature Committees. In 1980 the Handbook was approved at the Spring WSC and this encouraged members to write down their experience, strength and hope and mail it to the Literature Committee. By fall we had over eight hundred pages of input on recovery in NA using the 12 Steps. Again I was elected to chair and the Representatives chose Lincoln, Nebraska. That was where members of the host committee gave blood to get money to mail our flyers announcing the upcoming World Literature Conference in Lincoln. Greg P and Bob B attended to represent the experience and encouragement of the World Service Board of Trustees. The 600 pages of input was put into a composition but there was only so much the Committee could do so another World Literature Conference was held in the early winter in Memphis, Tennessee. This was all proper and announced through the reports of the WSC to the Regions, Areas and Groups worldwide. Conference attendance was over a hundred although the list showed only seventy-five before they stopped counting. There was a twelve dollar fee, so that may explain why not everyone was able to sign the attendance list. We never turned away any addict from a Lit Conference.

By mid-week of the nine day Literature Conference, we could see our work being done and began to consider how to get a review form out to the Fellowship. This was the obviously the next thing to do. So, we called around to all the Regions that we needed money to print and distribute the review form to all the groups we could find. No one complained and in two weeks the Fellowship sent in $17,000. This is when everything changed. We held the nine day Memphis Literature Conference and sent out the Review Form with a grey cover to every group in the world. Somehow, to see addicts pulling together and accomplishing what they set out to do shocked the members who had attended and supported NA as a movement yet not in writing. They were shocked and angry. The idea of “group conscience” was foreign to them. The reason they were caught unawares is even if the worked as volunteers at WSO, they had been led to believe they were at the center of the NA world. How could a bunch of newcomers from the Mid-west and East Coast come up with a book in three short years? Group Conscience became a new factor in NA, one that had not existed in earlier years. Perhaps they underestimated the power of having a service structure. - Pete B.

So if I fall in love with someone “out of the blue’ there is a match which almost no one in our culture knows about. She smells right, in a way and on a level that is invisible to the naked eye. One other thing from the movie. Cut the grass, get hot and sweaty and run the tee shirt across a fabric seat in the bedroom. Your girl will sit in that chair by preference and not know why she does it. Her genome selects that seat. To me, this is part of the recovery puzzle most people never know about. I was a biology major, so it stands out to me. When I was a pistol toting hippie in Atlanta in 1970 and 71, I told 20 to 50 people what to do from sun up to sun down every day four months at a time with no pay. Every Friday hundreds of hippies descended on the Peachtree Strip at 10th and Peachtree in Atlanta. During a riot I was arrested for Saying “I need a hundred and fifty dollars to get Claudia out of jail. She was a little hippie chick who had been pushed into a wall out front of our store by a policeman face first. I went into our store and yelled for help to take care of one of our own. The charge was obscenity in front of a woman - inside our store. I sat in a police wagon during the riot and spent the night in Fulton County jail. My people got me out the next day and the case was dead docketed by the same lawyer who represented Hustler Magazine owner Larry Flint when he got shot. How’s that for genetics? All without any official title or funds. This was before recovery and well before I got clean in 1974.

“NA is not affiliated with any other organizations or law enforcement groups.” Statement to this effect is read at each and every meeting of NA. There is a conflict between your sending criminals to NA and our published statements. When those you send hear these words read, they realize something is amiss.

Over years of experience, suffering addicts seeking recovery in NA, we have come to believe that addiction is a disease characterized by obsession and compulsion along with denial and general confusion. We call this the “Disease Concept.”

Essential to our recovery is an atmosphere of recovery. The presence of people who do not admit their addiction or their need for help interrupt this atmosphere and the atmosphere spoils the meeting for those who are seeking recovery. Forced attendance may actually help some addicts awaken to their addiction and need for help. The opposite effect is when our members no longer feel safe and flee from such meetings. Of course we do not hear from these members.

Our recovery is based on a simple set of Steps and involves surrender, belief, relief from defects and unmade amends, prayer and meditation. These Steps lead to an awakening of the spirit that changes a person’s mindset and behavior. This is the aim of total abstinence and ongoing recovery in NA.

NA is not a classroom for Drug Court. We provide a mindset, vocabulary and proven program of recovery. If we are not respected, we cannot help addicts. Our Twelve Traditions protect our atmosphere of recovery. A copy of our Basic Text is available on request.

HAPPINESS

There are two kinds of people: the fear based and the faith based. Many today find themselves in transition. I have found my life habits moving towards faith. When I sit and think about how my JP watched over my life, I realize how ?God is present in every part of my existence. God is in me, along with all the things and people in my life. When I set aside a few minutes every day to contemplate, doors open that I could not see before. The amazing thing is that I had to find and practice a way of life until the practices have become a pattern of positive havits. When I do my part, HP does the rest. It feels like God enjoys my happiness.

NA Writing Zone
In the Spirit of those who wrote the NA Basic Text, we welcome all who wish to contribute writing that frees our members and shows a way forward in the darkest of days. Fortunately, addicts thrive on adversity, so we're in great shape although it may not feel that great! As material comes in, we will make a place for it and may have a table of subjects to help readers select subject to read about. It is a fine time to air out questions and misunderstandings. We must become informed together if we plan to stand together. It is a comfort to know where we stand on issues as it becomes socially acceptible to have your own views and beliefs. It is part of what makes us important and unique. I personally believe that all life moves in waves - up and down, then up again. We do not want copyrighted material unless special arrangements are made to protect your rights.
We live in a period of great change. If we are alert and informed, these changes can be for the best. There is no doubt that the better we are informed, the better our choices will be, for ourselves and those we care about. The Program and People of NA enrich us and we grow. As we grow, we become complacent. Just human. Important to maintain surrender and deepen the source of our empowerment. If we let it go to our head, we can slide back to being powerlessness. No great man or great woman is that different from you. They just had their interior together.
NA has been growing since the Basic Text came out. The status of group conscience processing has diminished since professionals took charge. Paid employees are taken more seriously than 12 Step member to the detriment of both. Much is known yet not written. Perhaps it could be similar to teenagers learning to work on cars. Ten or fifteen kids are working on cars together and they begin to talk about the importance of tightening nuts. Most nuts are simply tightened until the nut no longer turns. One of the older kids mentions the variation of tention be Bob the Big Guy and Sammy the Small Guy. There are cases where the degree of tentitiion is so important there is even a special tool with a tension scale. Amends can be so casual they are not even noticed. Tears in the eyes and stop all action means you are more sincere. - Bo S.

UPDATE

After three years of being lost in a web-fog, this website is again resurrected! I paid the domain registration but the site was online! A friend helped resolve the problems and da-da, the site reappeared. After years of inaction, I began to study and research .html and even breezing through some Wordpress tutorials. The August 11, 2020 date begins the review to reset information and supply new information for several websites. I have forgotten how to do this editing and limp towards renewed ability, with the help of a Loving God! It is a strange play on the the rejuvenating power of surrender! I have more energy available when I stop fighting!

Free-writes to include: Visions, retakes, structure, new words. And, surely, more.

NASALDEN

A dear friend baggered me to start a site that specialized in 'just books' without commentary or other elements that may serve only to complicate. We are all on a learning which leads us from what we know to what we need to know. Begun in May of 2016, I was able to get together $15,000 to establish the original inventory. With an initial mark-up of 10% which was upgraded to 15% this year on group conscience items only, I included books like Bob Stone's "My Years with NA" which is a sort of joke for those who knew Bob's sense of humor: MYNA. I also included "Matter of Principle" by my friend Jim Miller who helped write the Basic Test. I send a quiet check to his widow in his honor from time to time. I hope someday to include a number of autobiographies. If we have learned one thing, it is that the more people know, the better they can make good decisions. The general public knows much more about NA and will soon know more as we move forward together. I should dare to hope that some of our wondrous stories will become motions pictures since we are such entertaining and colorful people!

ARNA

As members grew bolder by learning to make their own booklets, most were denied a listing on their local meeting schedules. The idea was that addicts would die from random information on recovery that failed to meet the protective editing provided by our world service corporation. It was decided somewhere that only 'proper' and 'paid' employees could be trusted with the precious and corrrect information which met with corporate approval. This amazing departure from good sense resulted in years of damaging changes in our service structure and the Fellowship's knowledge and understanding or NA 12 Steps and 12 Traditions. Spiritual principles were pushed aside in favor or financial gain. Today is a new day. Groups denied a listing on local meeting schedules got together and formed a regional service committee and called themselves the Automous Region of NA. Please go to www.arna.world for more information. A plan goes forward to build a new publication designed to inform and encourage our membership. In these times the corporate structure which has emphasized money over the needs of people is being slowly dismantaled. It has taken forth years to re-assert the spiritual nature of our Fellowship. Don't fear change. Change is the movement of the hands of our Higher Power.

“Our goal is not to make ourselves look good, but to edify and present the vigor and energy of our Fellowship. Since none of us seek recompenseationa, our goal is to keep our readers up to date on the growth and development of our Membership. Spiritual and scientific breakthroughs deepen and widen our potential abilities and the make known our accomplishments. Addiction deadens and depresses our goals for a happy future clean and paints addicts in colors of fear and shame. Recovery emboldens and encourages our happiness and our ability to accept good things in our lives. Recovery has the ability to remake our pasts in the light of a new understanding.”

Nudge to the Judge

Drug Court information on NA

NA is not affiliated with any other organizations or law enforcement groups.@ Statement to thsi effect read at each and every meeting of NA. There is a conflict between your sending criminals to NA and our published statements. When those you sendd hear these words read, they realize someting is amiss.

Over years of experience, suffering addicts seeking recovery in NA, we have come to believe that addiction is a disease characterized by obsession and compulsion along with denial and general confusion. We call this the ADisease Concept.@

Essential to our recovery is an atmosphere of recovery. The presence of people who do not admit their addiction or their need for help interrupt tis atmosphere and spoils the meeting for those who are seeking recovery.

Forced attendance may actually help some addicts awaken tho their addicton and need for help. The opposite effect is when our members no longer feell safe and flee such meetings. Of course we do not hear from these members.

Our recovery is based on a simple set of Steps and involves surrender, belief, relief from defects and unmade amends, prayer and meditation. These Steps lead to an awakening of the spirit tht changes a person=s mindset and behavior. This is the aim of total abstinence and ongoing recovery in NA.

NA is not a classroom for Drug Court. We provide a mindset, vocabulary and proven program of recovery. If we are not respected, we cannot help addicts.

- New Writings from Friends in NA -

Speaking with members, we sometimes go into areas where I ask for an essay. These essays will appear in the ARNA Magazine when it is ready to begin publication. The idea for the ARNA Magazine is that many members write a variety of articles on different subjects. Over time the readers develop the background and mindset to swim in the deep waters of NA service. It is what we learn after we think we know it all that counts.

I'll get it rolling. It is now early November and the nights will soon become cooler. I am sorta stuck in my home because my Honda Civic blew a head gasket and the cure is replacing the engine! Ain't the clean life grand? The most interesting thing is the shifts among my many friends, here and over seas. It seems my mind and heart is settling and I seem to be able to get around to doing small things around the house. The Twelve Steps are really coming home. Wondrous to feel the deeper side of the Steps reveals itself. I just celebrated Forty-six years in July coming up on seventy-six years chronological. A dear friend pointed out how fortunate I am in so many ways. I have found my life mission and get to play a role to help things along. My mission is writing things that illuminate the way for others. Any time I get drawn into things of the world my Higher Power seems to keep me on the sacred path. Since my mid-teens I have sought things money cannot buy.

That doesn't mean God doesn't provide for me. It just mean I don't get hung up on things. Working on a chapter in the NA Way of Life devoted to families seems to take me ever deeper into the wonderous ways we are able to rebuild our lives through the 12 Steps. If we lost a parent, the Fellowship provides. If we did not pursue things of the spirit, things seem to come clear and understand manifests on a daily basis. The government has finally admitted a Unidentified Areal Phenomenon was not built on our planet. A plan to free us of our addiction to fossil fuels seems underway in a fantastic manner. The North Sea and California shores are carpeted with oil tanders since people are not burning so much gasoline. How's that? It takes time to see God's Will in the works. When I learned how to slow down and pay attention. God always finds a way. - Bo S.

DANGER OF POWER PLAYS IN NA

The message has been lost. Somehow the unity disappeared. It is not so much group conscious as a power play. People addicted to power are drawn to positions of power. And they don’t even realize it. Once in, they take the bull by the horns and start making decisions. This infuriates the group members who rebel against the power addict. One tell take sign of this is people overloading themselves with commitments. Another is not running things past the committee to leave them in the loop. Often the power grabber is shunned and feels hurt that the group has turned against them.

The cycle seems to go on ever picking up speed. Why? Could be no service workshops. Monkey see, monkey do. Leaders with bad habits are the new teachers with others learning from them. In my area, the 40 minute meeting is the rage. Once everyone has shared, the meeting is ended and everyone runs out of the room.

A good meeting starts on time and ends on time is seen as more outdated information from the old-timers.

Point being, it appears that this is the new norm.

I have concluded that I just have no choice but to accept it.

They are not seeking a mentor.

They are ok with the status quo.

This can drive me crazy if I let it.

My only hope is to personally not crosstalk, chant, seize power, roll over people. Perhaps someone will notice and learn. Perhaps not.

This is new compared to the 80’s when I came in.

Perhaps a miracle le will occur, it has before.

In the mean time I have my one or two service positions and that is all.

I try to give a lot of feedback before moving forward, hopefully with group conscious.

If a lot of us played it this way it might have an effect.

John F.

General Input

An item listed for input to the NA Basic Text in the Handbook for NA Lit Committees,  the Long Form of the AA 12 Traditions are included for your consideration. Surely they are included in the gift from AA of the 12 Steps and 12 Traditions from which our NA Program was founded.

NA REFORMATION

What we need in NA is a reformation movement to restore some of the things that were so attractive to our early growth and expansion while retaining some of the efficiency and protocol developed by world services during the dark period. Lessons can be learnt from this so that others do not repeat the mistakes of the past twenty years. There need be no repercussions as everyone was pretty confused and blame is hard to access among people disadvantaged by their leadership. In other words, it is a no-fault situation brought about be rapid growth of our NA Fellowship and expansion of money, property concerns and the prestige that comes with service at the world level. Where is the top of the mountain? The Home Group! Time to get Back to Basics! - Ed

1) Everyone has a say in NA. Democratic principles give you a voice in your program.

2) Trusted servants at every level are trained to understand and appreciate the beauty of overcoming personal boundaries through learning self-lessness. Big egos need not apply!

3) Study materials are prepared and distributed under the direction of NA members active in the NA society. People can't be blamed for not knowing that which cannot be read and studied. We have to write the study materials if our side is to be in evidence.

4) Books and role models populate our service structure and recovery meetings.

Please send us your reactions and responses to the various books displayed on this website. Feel free to copy and share. We have been working for almost two decades on this book. And now we have three more books to work on. It is obvious that our method is sound and includes a wide variety of NA members from all over. We know there are many members who support our work and have already been using the new material for purposes of recovery for quite a few years. There have been many emails thanking us and expressing gratitude and joy for the miracle of writing new material in the time honored NA way!

Of course, there are still many members who have not read the book and think is it somehow out of order for addicts to combine efforts to work a collective 12th Step in this manner. Please send us letters of support by snail or email fit to be displayed on this website. Some members are just freaked out by new writing. They missed out on the 'Book Years' in NA and don't realize we have every right to write. You don't have to get permission from anyone to work your 12th Step. We want to be gentle and loving but firm in our dedication to doing our part to see that the NA message is carried and heard.

Thanks for all your love and support for "OUR BOOK."

Long Clean Time Stories
Stories of members with 20 or more years clean. This book may serve several purposes but the one we thought most important for now is the opportunity to define ourselves by members who are actually working the 12 Steps of NA. Too long have we been defined by our nosiest members and relapsing individuals whereas a recovering person is not so loud and they focus on their recovery and helping others. We have plenty of members with long clean time today. Work in progress will be posted on this site. - Ed.

Our Symbol

by Greg Pierce

IS THIS AN OUTSIDE ISSUE?

Imagine sitting in a circle and having an NA meeting where the topic was discussion of written recovery material. As the material is being read, all members present have prayed to be used as instruments of a Loving God and listen to the letter and the spirit of the writing. This is a literature review meeting.

Is this outside literature if the subject matter is our written message of recovery? There is a big difference between writing recovery material in a group setting and reading outside literature. How else could our written message be created? We may not have a future is we canít update our program with new literature. The disease of addiction never slowed down.

Reading, discussing and editing in a group setting after prayer is the basic formula for NA literature, right? Do we hire people to write for us or do we write our message down in groups of members?

THE FELLOWSHIP IN 2008 MAY NOT KNOW
THEY HAVE A RIGHT TO WRITE - SPREAD THE WORD!

UNDERSTAND THIS : WE CAN'T DO IT FOR YOU - ONLY ADDICTS CAN WRITE NA LITERATURE IN OPEN, PARTICIPATORY CONFERENCES. WE HAVE SEEN LITERATURE WRITTEN WITHOUT FULL PROCESSING AND THE CHANGES THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN MADE BY CLEAN ADDICTS WERE LEFT UNDONE IN MATERIAL APPROVED AT THE WSC, WEAKENING OUR WRITTEN PROGRAM OF RECOVERY.  ONLY LITERATURE THAT HAS BEEN FULLY PROCESSED BY FELLOWSHIP CAN REALLY BE CALLED "NA APPROVED." - ED

The Spirit of NA

New book to focus on the spirituality found in NA that has worked so tirelessly in the background from our earliest beginnings through the present. Anyone knows that loud people get attention and those members busy working their 12 Steps, living the program and honoring the 12 Traditions are not noisy.  But they are the men and women who keep NA alive and make the program worth coming back to! Trouble makers, mis-matchers, are often much more visible and vocal than those who plug in the coffee pots, lay out the literature and stay up last talking about NA with newcomers and other members. So, let's hear it for those who love us as they learn to love themselves.

In Loving Service,

Bo S.

We have sought throughout this effort to involve members from all over in the process of reading, editing and collecting new material. This section gives you a chance to see the group conscience process in action. We value this inclusive approach because we believe those who have to live the program should be the ones to authenticate written recovery material. No service board or committee can do this because that would be dictating group conscience. We believe dictating group conscience is a contradiction in terms. - Ed
